What do pop princess Britney Spears, Charlie’s Angel star Lucy Liu and “I’m Like a Bird” singer Nelly Furtado have in common with one of Zynga’s most popular games? They all share the same birthday. While Britney, Lucy and Nelly will be digging into their birthday cake, they’ll be joined by over 50 million people across the world doing the same thing. Okay, so maybe not all 50 million people who play CityVille (according to AppData.com) will be getting a slice of a cake, but millions will be celebrating the game’s first birthday.
CityVille, our very own game of “Monopoly meets Main Street” was born in the late night of Thursday, 12/2/10, weighing approximately 9.8 pounds to one proud team. CityVille quickly rose to the number one game on Facebook, according to AppData.com. The game – which lets players across the world build the city of their dreams by building abodes, businesses and even boats, while keeping in touch with friends and family right on their game board – has kept this top spot since January 2011.
And while you may think that players are just sticking around to get a chance to ‘bailamos’ with Enrique Iglesiasand do the moonwalk with Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour by Cirque du Soleil, think again. From being able to build burger joints, to naming coffee shops and even traveling to the City of Lights – players get to do it all. And there’s no shortage of fun for this birthday party – where players will be celebrating by building a limited edition City Center, with a chance to earn 5 million in-game City coins. Yes, 5 million coins. That’s better than any birthday cake, or party hat.
